With Byrd at the South Pole

The record of the first Antarctic expedition Admiral Richard E. Byrd led between 1928 and 1930. It set out from the base called Little America and included the first flight over the South Pole. The two cameramen who shot it, Joseph T. Rucker and Willard Van der Veer, stayed there with the party for two years, so the footage is not the work of an outside eye but of people living inside the expedition. The soundtrack is mostly music and effects, with narration read by Floyd Gibbons. It won the Oscar for best cinematography at the third Academy Awards, the first Oscar ever given to a documentary and still the only one in that category. Paramount distributed it.
