What Within the Whirlwind Is About

Marleen Gorris’s 2009 film adapts Yevgenia Ginzburg’s memoir Journey into the Whirlwind. Ginzburg, a professor of literature, was arrested on invented charges during the Great Purge of 1937 and sentenced to ten years of hard labour in Siberia. Having lost everything and no longer wanting to live, she meets Anton Walter, a doctor in the camp, and begins to hold on again. The film neither aestheticises the camp nor converts it into a story of deliverance; what it says is that survival was arbitrary. Emily Watson plays Ginzburg and Ulrich Tukur the doctor. Ginzburg in fact spent eighteen years in prisons and camps. Gorris had won an Oscar with Antonia’s Line.
