The soldier Franz Woyzeck takes whatever work he can find in town to support Marie and their illegitimate child. One of the jobs is volunteering as a subject for a local doctor, who feeds him nothing but peas for weeks. As the body gives way the mind starts to come apart, and learning that Marie is involved with the drum major finishes it. Adapting Georg Büchner’s unfinished play, Werner Herzog films it almost as theatre, without smoothing the text. Klaus Kinski plays Woyzeck, with Eva Mattes as Marie.
