What Yellow Door: '90s Lo-fi Film Club Is About
Lee Hyuk-rae's 2023 Korean documentary is about a film club formed in Seoul in the early nineties. Members passed taped copies from hand to hand and analysed films together. The documentary brings the members back together. Bong Joon Ho is among them, and the short he made at the time is shown for the first time; the narrative is not about the birth of a director but about how hard access to cinema was. The director was himself a member. The interviews were conducted online, and that form is plainly visible in the film. Who it's for: those curious about Korean film history and cinephile culture. Who it's not for: viewers expecting analysis of Bong Joon Ho's films; the documentary covers what came before them.
