What Revenge of the Snakes Is About
The village headman sells a piece of the common land to Haceli, who sets about building his house directly in front of Kara Bayram's door. Bayram, who lives there with his old mother Irazca, his wife Hatce and three children, refuses to accept it, and the person who holds the line hardest is Irazca. Metin Erksan adapted it from Fakir Baykurt's novel and filmed village life without decoration, showing the power relation for exactly what it is. When it opened in 1962 cinemas in several towns were picketed and one was damaged. The censorship problem ended after President Cemal Gursel watched it privately at Cankaya and approved it, and the film was released without a single frame cut. It was named best film at the Carthage festival in 1966.
