What The Well Is About

A man abducts Fatma, a woman he has seen from a distance. She does not want this; he keeps her with him by force. Every time she gets away she is found again and held again. What the film looks at is the relation of power between two people, and the woman’s consent is the question at the centre. The third attempt to force her ends badly for both of them. Metin Erksan wrote the story himself after looking for a novel about ownership to adapt and finding none. The film was little understood when it came out; later it was counted among the hard, unusual works of Turkish cinema. It took the awards for best film and best director at the first Adana film festival. Nil Göncü and Hayati Hamzaoğlu appear in Metin Erksan’s eighty four minute Turkish film, completed in 1968.
