What Young Light Is About
In the Ruhr at the start of the sixties, twelve-year-old Julian, whose family is barely getting by, is left almost alone in the flat when his mother and small sister go away for a while and his father is down the mine. He has to deal on his own with the world of adults, of older boys, and of the older girl next door, and what accumulates eventually strains the family to breaking. Adolf Winkelmann adapted Ralf Rothmann’s novel and trusted images and silence to carry it: roughly nine minutes pass before the first word is spoken. A country running on coal and steel, seen from a child’s height.
