What Young Thugs: Nostalgia Is About
The film puts a boy’s home and school in Kishiwada at its centre; his family is violent and disordered and at the same time comic and lovable, and the child grows up between the two. Although it carries traces of the sudden harshness Takashi Miike is known for, what the story is really interested in is something else: the moment the boy steps out of the world of fantasy he had built for himself and moves willingly into the next stage of life. The ninety four minute Japanese production carries marks of the director’s own childhood and is the film he has said is his favourite among his own work. Naoto Takenaka, Saki Takaoka and Yuki Nagata appear; it was completed in 1998.
