What You're Gonna Miss Me: A Film About Roky Erickson Is About
The documentary is about the musician Roky Erickson. He was the singer of the 13th Floor Elevators and counted among the pioneers of psychedelic rock. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and a marijuana case in 1969 led to years of being held in hospitals. In the period that followed he withdrew from everyone and saw almost nobody for more than a decade. He lived in poverty and could not reach proper treatment. His brother Sumner worked to change the care arrangement their mother had set up. The film tells that effort together with Erickson’s return to music. It shows the illness not as a strangeness but as a condition left untreated. Billy Gibbons is among those who speak in Keven McAlester’s ninety one minute American documentary, completed in 2007.
