What Zana Is About
A Kosovar woman lives under the weight of a past she has kept down for years, while her family pushes her towards faith healers for her infertility. The film puts the expectation of motherhood and the wreckage left by the war in the same room, and builds its tension with the tools of horror cinema. It is Antoneta Kastrati’s first feature, and the subject is her own: she lost her mother and her sister in the war in Kosovo, and the film was shot in their own village, with Sevdije Kastrati as cinematographer. Adriana Matoshi leads. It had its world premiere at the Toronto film festival on 7 September 2019 and opened in Kosovo on 21 September 2019.
