What Zarafa Is About

Seventy-eight minutes of hand-drawn French animation. Maki is a small boy escaping slave traders; in the desert he meets a baby giraffe whose mother has been killed and promises to look after her. When the Pasha of Egypt decides to send the giraffe as a gift to the king of France, Maki goes along on the journey: Alexandria, Marseille, the snowbound Alps and finally Paris. It draws on the story of the first giraffe actually brought to France. Slavery, separation and death are plainly present despite it being a children's film.
