What Zatoichi's Pilgrimage Is About
Ichi is tired of shedding blood. He sets out on the Buddhist pilgrimage of the eighty-eight temples in Shikoku, meaning to settle his past with himself. But the road is cut short. He comes to a village where a yakuza boss has everyone cowed and nobody dares say a word. Ichi does not want to get involved, since avoiding exactly this is why he set out. In the end he draws his sword again, to protect a widow. Kazuo Ikehiro directs; it is the fourteenth film in the series, written by Kaneto Shindo, with Shintarō Katsu again as Ichi. It is among the bleakest of them, and it looks as hard at the townspeople who stay silent as at the gang.
