What Zero Point Is About
Johannes is sensitive and restless, and when he gets into an elite school in Tallinn he assumes life is about to improve. The opposite happens: his classmates freeze him out and grind him down systematically. Looking for acceptance he goes back to his old friends in Lasnamäe, where there are drugs and not much else. At home his mother's mental health is deteriorating. Mihkel Ulk's 2014 Estonian film comes from Margus Karu's novel. It shows bullying not as an incident but as a daily, continuous condition, and every refuge the boy finds carries its own price. Belonging nowhere ends up meaning having to start again from nothing.
