16 films

Tyler Perry's films came out of the theatre. Madea, whom he brought out in plays of his own writing, is a loud-mouthed grandmother never without her gun; her name is the contraction of a common form of address in English and Perry plays her in women's clothes. He created the character in a play in 2000, carried her into cinema after 2005, and directed films like Madea Goes to Jail and Madea's Big Happy Family himself. He works as writer, director, producer and performer at once: he directed non-Madea work such as The Six Triple Eight and STRAW, while on Gone Girl he appears as a performer only. The studio he founded in 2006 has stood on a former military base in Atlanta since 2015.
