What 08/15 Is About
Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Private Asch and Gunner Vierbein serve in the same unit and could not be less alike. The instructors take every chance to come down on Vierbein, whom they find clumsy, with the erratic Corporal Platzek leading the way; the harassment starts as minor extra duties and steadily hardens. In the end Asch stands beside his friend and takes on their superiors. Paul May’s hundred and three minute West German film was adapted from the bestselling novel by Hans Hellmut Kirst, whose title is the number of an army regulation. Kirst wrote the screenplay as well, and the film became the first part of a trilogy continued in 1955. Joachim Fuchsberger takes his first major role.
