11M: Terror in Madrid

This 2022 Spanish documentary is about the bombs that exploded on commuter trains in Madrid on 11 March 2004. More than a hundred and ninety people were killed and thousands injured, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in Spanish history. The film rests on the accounts of survivors, first responders and people involved in the investigation. A second line is political: the attack came three days before a general election, and the government's statements about who was responsible turned rapidly into an argument that marked the result and the political climate of the years that followed. The documentary is as much about how information was managed as about the event. Archive footage and testimony run together. Who it's for: viewers who follow recent European history and documentaries about terrorism. Who it's not for: anyone approaching footage of the attack and the rescue effort unprepared.
