What 13 Assassins Is About

Naritsugu, a lord and the shogun's younger brother, answers to nobody. He rapes a woman and kills her and her husband, and when one of his own retainers disembowels himself to bring the crime into the open, the matter is hushed up again. On top of that he is about to be given high office. Hanbei is charged with protecting him; Shinzaemon with killing him. The two are the finest strategists of their generation. Shinzaemon gathers twelve men and turns a whole town into a trap. Eiichi Kudō directs the Japanese film; two hours and five minutes, in black and white, with Chiezo Kataoka as Shinzaemon. Takashi Miike remade the same story in 2010; this is the first version, and its last quarter is nothing but the battle in that town.
