What Yokohama BJ Blues Is About
Eiichi Kudō's 1981 Japanese film follows BJ, who sings in the bars of Yokohama. Since the music does not pay, he also works as a private detective. A case leads him back to an old killing. The narrative does not put the solution first; songs cut in and the music sets the film's rhythm. Yūsaku Matsuda leads and sings himself. The images are built from the night harbour and neon. The close comes without explanation. Who it's for: those who like Japanese detective films and crime pictures with music. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a tightly plotted mystery; the film puts atmosphere ahead of story.
