What The Great Killing Is About

Eiichi Kudō's 1964 Japanese film is set in the seventeenth century. One of the shogunate's elders plans to run the country himself by putting the shogun's brother Tsunashige on the throne as a puppet. The plot formed against him is betrayed, most of the conspirators are caught and tortured, and one man is left: a samurai who believes in nobody, himself included. Kudō's film refuses the heroic shape of the sword picture outright; nobody here wins and nobody comes out clean. Heavy, dark and bloody, from the hard wing of sixties Japanese cinema.
