What 180° South Is About
In 1968 Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins drove a van from California to Patagonia, climbing and surfing along the way, and both of them later built large companies. Years afterwards Jeff Johnson decides to repeat the route, heading south by freighter, by boat and by whatever else is going. It starts out as an adventure film and turns into the fight against dam and mining projects in Patagonia. Chris Malloy's documentary has Chouinard and Tompkins in it, both describing how that journey led them into conservation. The film is trying to show what is actually behind the legend the younger travellers are chasing.
