What 1982 Is About
The last day of the school year at a private school outside Beirut. Eleven year old Wissam has one problem, finding the courage to tell a classmate what he feels, while the teachers hear aircraft overhead and wonder how much longer they can keep the day ordinary. Oualid Mouaness draws on his own schoolboy memory of the 1982 invasion and holds the whole story at a child's scale, which is how enormous history turns out to fit inside a break between lessons. Nadine Labaki plays the teacher carrying the tension in the classroom. Toronto gave it the NETPAC award and Lebanon submitted it to the Oscars.
