Cast: Richard Davis

What 2nd Chance Is About

Ramin Bahrani's documentary is about Richard Davis. A bankrupt pizzeria owner, Davis developed the modern bulletproof vest and, to prove it worked, shot himself at point blank range well over a hundred times, releasing the footage in promotional videos he made himself. The company grew and the vests genuinely saved lives. Then questions arose about how well the material held up, and Davis went to considerable lengths to cover defects in both the product and the business. The film holds both of those at once, showing the distance between what the man actually built and the story he told about himself, declaring him neither a hero nor a single-dimension fraud. Much of the archive comes from Davis's own tapes.
