40 m² Deutschland

Turna grew up in a village in Turkey. Her husband Dursun brings her to Germany. She set out with the hope of a new life. Where they arrive is a small flat in an old building in Hamburg. The flat is forty square metres. Every morning, leaving for work, Dursun locks the door on her. His reason is to keep his wife away from the life outside. Turna stays alone in that flat all day. The windows are her link to the world. She watches the street through the glass. She has nobody to talk to, and she does not speak the language. As time passes she takes shelter in memories and daydreams. The film puts the strain of migration and the pressure on a woman side by side. It plays out almost entirely inside the same closed space. The unexpected death of her husband finally opens the door. Turna is left on the threshold of a country she does not know. Özay Fecht and Yaman Okay appear in the eighty minute film, a German production Tevfik Başer finished in 1986.
