What 6.9 on the Richter Scale Is About
An ordinary Romanian actor in his forties is barely holding together between a part in a musical he cannot manage, a wife in depression, and an obsessive fear of the large earthquake everyone expects. Then his manipulative father gets involved. Nae Caranfil's 2016 film uses comedy and the musical at the same time without trying to separate the ridiculous from the painful. Bucharest itself is inside the story: fear of earthquakes is not abstract in Romania but part of the buildings and part of the city's memory. What the film is really about is not the expectation of disaster but the daily life of people who have learned to live alongside it.
