What Closer to the Moon Is About
In 1959 a group in Bucharest robbed the national bank's cash transport in broad daylight. They were not ordinary criminals: all party members, Jewish intellectuals who had been in the resistance during the war, some of them holding state positions. After they were caught the regime asked something strange of them, that they reenact the robbery for a propaganda film. Then they were executed. Nae Caranfil tells that true story and pitches it as comedy, since the absurdity is already in the events. Vera Farmiga and Mark Strong star. It remains one of the most argued-over episodes in Romania's communist past.
