9to5: The Story of a Movement

At the start of the seventies a group of secretaries in Boston came together. The same arrangement had held in offices for years. Women made the coffee, answered the telephone and were paid little. There was no prospect of promotion. One day they decided not to keep quiet. They set up an organisation of their own. They took its name from the working hours. Their demands were plain: equal pay, respect and a chance of promotion. They started with small actions. Then the movement spread to other cities. That is where the unions and the women’s movement crossed. The documentary tells the story through the women who founded it. The subject connects to low paid work today as well. Jane Fonda and Karen Nussbaum speak in the eighty nine minute documentary, an American production Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar finished in 2020.
