What A Bunch of Amateurs Is About
Kim Hopkins's 2022 British documentary follows an amateur film club in Bradford. The club has stood for many years and its members have grown old. It is now at risk of closing. The members decide to remake a well-known musical; the documentary does not find the attempt ridiculous and shows why it matters so much to them. The filming was done in the clubhouse and in the members' homes. The tone is warm, and old age and loneliness are stated plainly. Who it's for: those who like amateur film culture and documentaries about communities. Who it's not for: viewers looking for pace; the documentary moves calmly.
