What A Cage of Nightingales Is About
In the France of the 1930s, a new supervisor arrives at a boarding institution for boys who have been in trouble with the law and sets about forming a choir to wake the music in them, while the head of the institution regards the idea with unbroken scepticism. Jean Dréville’s eighty nine minute film shows what happens when an occupation is put in the place of punishment, and it does so without preaching. The story was inspired by a real practice, the work of educators at a centre called Ker Goat who used choral singing and new teaching methods. It reached more than five million viewers in 1945, making it the most watched French film of the year, and it was nominated for an Academy Award for its screenplay.
