What A Choice of Weapons: Inspired by Gordon Parks Is About
Gordon Parks was a staff photographer at LIFE and later became a novelist and a filmmaker; the weapon he chose, in his own phrase, was the camera. The documentary tells his career and sets three photographers working now beside him: Devin Allen, whose picture of the 2015 Freddie Gray protests became a Time cover, LaToya Ruby Frazier, who documented the Flint water crisis over five years, and Jamel Shabazz, who has recorded the streets of New York for decades. That turns the film from a biography into the story of something being handed on. John Maggio directed, with Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys as executive producers. It premiered at Tribeca on 18 June 2021 and went out on HBO on 15 November 2021.
