What A Girl in Black Is About
Michael Cacoyannis’s 1956 film takes place on Hydra. A writer down from Athens falls for Marina, the shy daughter of a widow the island has decided to gossip about, and the local suitor who had counted on her reads the whole thing as humiliation. What starts as a summer romance turns into the island settling its own accounts, and then a disaster arrives that changes the film’s register entirely. It was shot in eight weeks on very little money with a single camera, and Walter Lassally’s black-and-white photography gives the stone lanes and the cliffs a nearly mythic hardness. It was among the first Greek films to travel, winning a Golden Globe for foreign film and making a star of Ellie Lambeti.
