A Matter of Dignity

The daughter of a wealthy family learns the truth one day: the family is on the edge of bankruptcy. The appearance still holds, but there is nothing left behind it. She picks a way to solve it, planning to attach a rich man to herself and marry him. But she is caught between keeping the lie going and keeping up appearances. Holding the appearance up becomes the shared work of everyone in the house. The film builds class and standing as two faces of one matter. It comes out of the social drama vein of Greek cinema in the fifties. The hundred and twelve minutes take place inside a single house. Ellie Lambeti and Dimitris Papamichael appear in Mihalis Kakogiannis’s Greek film, completed in 1958.
