What The Trojan Women Is About
Troy has fallen and the women who survived it wait on the shore to be handed out as slaves. Queen Hecuba counts what is left; her daughter-in-law Andromache holds on to a small son, her daughter Cassandra to a future she has already seen, and Helen faces the anger of Greeks and Trojans alike. Michael Cacoyannis films Euripides with almost nothing softened, telling a war entirely from the side that lost it. Katharine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave, Geneviève Bujold and Irene Papas share the screen without any one of them being framed as the star. It sits between his Electra and his Iphigenia, the three together forming his Euripides cycle.
