What Windfall in Athens Is About
On a lazy Sunday morning in Athens, Mina, who works in a milliner’s shop, has her bag stolen while she is swimming; the lottery ticket inside changes hands, and that ticket wins. The man who bought it is a penniless and charming musician. The two of them take the money to law, but the way the case goes brings them closer together. Mihalis Kakogiannis’s ninety five minute Greek film was his first feature; Ellie Lambeti plays Mina and Dimitris Horn the musician. The painter Yannis Tsarouchis worked on the sets and Manos Hadjidakis wrote the music. It opened on 11 January 1954, went to Cannes the same year and took a prize of merit at the Edinburgh Festival.
