Allan King’s 1969 documentary records ten weeks in the marriage of Billy and Antoinette Edwards in Toronto, with their small son Bogart and their dog in the house. King never entered the house while filming: his cinematographer and sound recordist were inside, and he directed the film only in the evenings, in the editing of what had been shot that day. What comes out is a marriage in which argument, tenderness, wit and exhaustion all occupy the same room, often within a minute of each other. The network that commissioned it refused to broadcast it; Cannes took it. It is now treated as a landmark of direct cinema, and King called this kind of work an actuality drama.
