Aswan Harris What A Murder in the Park Is About
In 1982 Jerry Hillard and Marilyn Green were killed in Washington Park in Chicago. Anthony Porter was convicted in 1983 and sentenced to death; sixteen years later, two days before his execution, he was released after work by a journalism professor and his students at Northwestern University, and Alstory Simon went to prison in his place. The documentary turns that order around and argues that Porter was in fact guilty and Simon innocent, dwelling on the student team not having spoken to eyewitnesses and on the way Simon’s confession was obtained. These are the film’s claims and the matter is disputed. What is on the record is this: the prosecutor’s office reopened the case in 2013, and Simon was released in October 2014 after more than fifteen years inside. Shawn Rech and Brandon Kimber directed.
