What A Street Cat Named Bob Is About
James Bowen, living on the street in London and fighting a heroin addiction, finds an injured street cat. When Bob starts going with him people stop to watch, and slowly he puts his life back together and signs a book deal. Roger Spottiswoode directed, from James Bowen's memoir. Luke Treadaway plays Bowen and the real Bob plays himself. On an 8 million dollar budget it grossed 17.9 million. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 77 percent, the consensus calling it an unapologetically heartwarming movie that should move all but the most cynical of viewers. Metacritic is more measured at 54. It was named Best British Film at the UK National Film Awards in 2017. The Duchess of Cambridge attended the London premiere. Bob died in June 2020, and a Christmas-themed sequel, A Gift from Bob, was released that year after his death. Who it is for: viewers who like animal films and true stories. Who it is not for: anyone who resents being steered. Even while covering addiction and homelessness the film keeps its tone warm throughout.
