What A Summer Story Is About
Ashton, a young London lawyer walking across Dartmoor with a friend, twists his ankle and has to spend a few days at a nearby farmhouse. Something begins between him and Megan, the young woman of the house, and he extends his stay, to the considerable displeasure of her aunt and her boorish son. Piers Haggard adapted John Galsworthy’s story from 1916. What it describes is less a love affair than an abandonment: how the difference in class and the sense of duty cut across a life, and how the regret runs on for decades.
