What A Town Like Alice Is About
Malaya, 1941. The Japanese army advances, British civilians are taken, the men are sent to labour camps, and nobody has any plan for the women and children. What follows is a march of hundreds of miles that no camp commander will accept the end of. People die on the road, and Jean Paget keeps trying to hold the rest of them together. Along the way they meet Joe Harman, an Australian prisoner who risks himself to find them food and medicine. Jack Lee made the film in 1956 from Nevil Shute's novel. Shute explained the source himself: the real march happened in Sumatra and the women on it were Dutch. Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch both won BAFTAs.
