The film is about the Skladanowsky brothers at the beginning of German cinema: Max and Emil built a projecting device they called the Bioscop and held a public screening in Berlin on 1 November 1895, roughly two months before the Lumière brothers’ first programme. Wim Wenders made the film together with the students of the film and television school in Munich, using documentary, reenactment and experimental photography at once. Most of the images were taken on a hand cranked camera from the 1920s, silent and close to the slapstick tradition. The seventy nine minute film starts a hundred years ago and comes up to the present; at the end Max Skladanowsky’s daughter Lucie describes those first days in her own words. It was completed in 1995.
