What A Very Old Story Is About
A storyteller living in a poor and colourless world invents a tale out of his own life: in it he is a brave soldier, he finds a tinderbox, and a kindly sorcerer helps him. The soldier falls in love with a spoiled princess who sets riddles for her suitors, and the king wants the marriage because he believes the soldier is rich in gold. In the tale everything ends well; in life it does not. Nadezhda Kosheverova made the film at Lenfilm from Hans Christian Andersen’s story The Tinderbox, with a screenplay by Yuli Dunsky and Valery Frid. Oleg Dal plays both the storyteller and the soldier, Marina Neyolova the woman who leaves him and the princess, Georgy Vitsin the sorcerer, with Vladimir Etush also in the cast. It was released in 1970.
