What Abandoned Is About

Summer 1943; Countess Luisa and her son Andrea leave Milan to get away from the bombing and withdraw to their country villa, with friends of Andrea’s own age along. When scattered soldiers and refugees turn up at the gate asking for shelter, these wealthy young people start playing at being partisans. Andrea grows close to Lucia, a peasant girl. Then the Germans appear, looking for the real partisans, and the game is over. Francesco Maselli made it at twenty-five and it was his first feature. He wrote the screenplay with Aggeo Savioli and Eriprando Visconti, from a story by Visconti. It received a special mention at Venice in 1955 and was later put on the list of a hundred Italian films to be preserved.
