What Time of Indifference Is About
The Ardengo house, bourgeois and quietly going under, hangs on mortgages held by Leo Merumeci, a businessman without scruples. Leo keeps up his affair with the widow Maria Grazia while pursuing her young daughter Carla, and the son, Michele, watches all of it and does nothing. Francesco Maselli adapted Alberto Moravia's first novel from 1929 but moved the story out of Fascist era Rome into his own present, a choice that was argued over at length. Claudia Cardinale, Rod Steiger and Shelley Winters play it. Our record calls Maria Grazia a countess and never mentions Michele at all.
