What ABCD: American-Born Confused Desi Is About
Martin Prakkat's 2013 Malayalam comedy sends two cousins raised in America to Kerala. Jones and Korah live on their families' money and have never learned to take responsibility, so their fathers eventually lose patience, ship them home and turn off the tap. In Kerala they have to learn the rules of daily life, the language and the work. The title points at an abbreviation used for South Asians born in America, and much of the humour comes from cultural misreadings. In the second half the story shifts into a journalism strand and changes register, a transition generally considered its weakest element. Dulquer Salmaan's relaxed playing carries it. Who it's for: viewers who like Malayalam comedy and stories about immigrant identity. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a consistent tone and sharp cultural criticism.
