What Best Actor Is About

Martin Prakkat’s first film casts Mammootty as a schoolteacher who wants to act. Mohan is entirely serious about it and entirely unable to get anyone to open a door, so he starts taking routes toward a part that carry him somewhere he never accounted for, at which point the comedy changes temperature. The 2010 Malayalam picture is finally about the distance between a person who dreams of cinema and cinema itself, and it is generous rather than cruel about that distance. Nedumudi Venu, Lal and Salim Kumar are in support. It opened in December 2010 in seventy-eight cinemas in Kerala and a dozen more outside it, and launched Prakkat’s directing career.
