Abhiyum Naanum

Radha Mohan's 2008 Tamil film opens with two fathers meeting in a park. Raghuraman tells Sudhakar, who has a small child, about the relationship he built with his daughter over the years, and the narrative moves back in time. The subject is learning to let go. Raghuraman wants to protect his daughter at every stage; when the decision to marry comes he struggles to accept it, and the narrative shows his hesitation without vindicating it. Prakash Raj leads and the weight of the film is in his performance, with Trisha as the daughter. The tone is warm, the humour everyday and the narrative advances without producing melodrama. Ilaiyaraaja's music stands out. Who it's for: those who like Tamil family drama and father and daughter narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a driven plot; the film is almost entirely recollection.
