About a Girl

Charleen is fifteen and has had enough of everything. She is a Kurt Cobain fan, and every musician she admires is dead. Her father is out of the picture, her mother has taken up with the biology teacher, and her closest friend has become dull. She has an apprenticeship at a funeral home and rather likes it. One day she decides to put herself in the same place. The attempt does not work. She wakes up with her life exactly where it was, and this time she has to find a way to go on with it. Mark Monheim directs this German film of a hundred and four minutes, with Jasna Fritzi Bauer as Charleen and Heike Makatsch as her mother. It carries a heavy subject with comedy; what it does is not to make light of suicide but to take the feeling at that age seriously.
