What Above and Below Is About
The documentary follows five people in America living at the edge of the life everyone else sees. Rick and Cindy and Lalo live in the flood tunnels beneath the bright strip of Las Vegas. Dave is on his own in the Californian desert. April works in the Utah desert, at a facility built to simulate a mission to Mars. The film does not present these people as cases to be pitied; it records their days, their habits and their jokes. What comes out in the end is how far apart the ways of living are and how familiar the people. Nicolas Steiner’s hundred and twenty minute documentary was completed in 2015.
