Daryl Davis K Kenneth Nwadike J Jeff Schoep M Michael Wood Jr. What Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America Is About
Daryl Davis is a Black musician who has played with people like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. What he does in his spare time is unusual: he meets members of the Ku Klux Klan, sits down and talks with them, and becomes friends with some of them. He keeps the robes of those who leave the Klan; that is how his collection grows. His question is a single one: how can you hate me without knowing me. Matthew Ornstein's documentary does not vindicate Davis. The film includes his argument with young Black Lives Matter activists: for them, convincing individuals means nothing as long as the system itself does not change. Similar objections come from the Southern Poverty Law Center. The film lets both sides speak and does not say who is right.
