What After Life Is About
The last part of Lucas Belvaux's trilogy. Three films set in the same city over the same days pass through one another, so a person in the background of one sits at the centre of another, and each is told by the rules of a different genre. The centre here is Pascal, a policeman who believes catching the escaped convict Bruno will restore his standing. The person hiding Bruno is Agnes, Pascal's wife, who is addicted to morphine. At the same time Pascal begins to be drawn to Cecile, a teacher and a friend of his wife's, and the balance at home collapses altogether. The film treats the addiction as neither crime nor weakness, and the question of where Agnes gets her supply carries every moral question in it.
