What The Right of the Weakest Is About
In Liège there are a few men who lost their jobs when the factory closed. To buy a moped for the wife of their friend Patrick they plan a large robbery, and as anyone could predict nothing goes to plan. Lucas Belvaux wrote it, directed it and acts in it. The opening images show the dismantled steelworks of the Liège region, and that is exactly the ground the story stands on. It was partly prompted by a real hostage taking in the area in 1989. The title turns an expression around: the right of the weakest rather than the strongest. It played in competition at Cannes in 2006.
